Car Seat Safety

It’s that time of year where we need to bundle up our babies and children for the winter weather.

Snowsuits and big winter jackets are great for playing outdoors but please beware of the dangers of leaving them on whilst they are secured in a car seat.

The internal harness cannot be tightened correctly when your child is wearing a thick jacket or snowsuit.

In the event of an accident or harsh braking, the “air buffer” of the winter snowsuit is compressed, so that there is much more space for movement within the harness than is safe.

Photo 1️⃣ shows our baby strapped in to her seat and she seems tight and secure.

Photo 2️⃣ shows exactly the same harness setting as before, this time without the snowsuit - look at how loose the straps are!

Photo 3️⃣ shows it from the side which really highlights the strap gap.

Photo 4️⃣ shows how easily our baby could remove her arms from the straps

It is not safe to wear these items in a car seat.

There are other ways to keep warm in the car

☑️ Use footmuffs specifically designed for baby car seats

☑️ Put the jacket over them after buckling up

☑️ Use a blanket

❗️Remember we should also be removing hats in the car so our babies don’t overheat

It may take a few extra minutes in our already busy lives but our babies are too precious to risk it

Photos are not my own.
